Paula,
Until recently, I have always manually checked and updated my AV software (McAfee in my case), mainly because I just felt more confidence in sitting there and seeing it happen than I did in the automatic updates. I felt that way until a month or two ago when I caught a brand new virus from downloading my e-mail, while the new DAT files were still waiting on me to download and install them. Had I used the automatic updates, I would not have gotten the virus, because the latest DAT files would have stopped it from entering.
In a few words, I strongly urge you to utilize the automatic DAT updates if your AV software offers one, as most do these days. This does not stop you from manually checking for an update whenever you wish, and you will still occasionally have one do install when the updating cycle has not gotten to you yet, but you are making a mistake IMHO if you do not utilize the option if it is available. It is far easier (and less stressful on you) to do that than it is to deal with a virus that catches you as it did me. First one I have had in years, and I clearly could have prevented it.

Jerry thanks for getting back to me. I have it set for 1pm and didnt
update manually initially as I thought I would have no problem with the
automatic update...however, nothing happened...when I checked myself
about half an hour later, there was an update. Doesnt give me a lot of
confidence in leaving it to do this automatically. I have been
accustomed as you know to checking for updates manually as recently
there have been so many. I thought perhaps it had something to do with
this. The main thing is I can get the updates.

I have my schedular set for 11:10 am CST. I usually check manually
before that. So have had no trouble. I think there were 2 updates
yesterday, one earlier in the day and one later. Perhaps the reason
your automatic updater did not pickup is that the update was made
available after your scheduled time.
