Hi, Joan --

I'm not an expert but think either of the above (except at RootsWeb, of
course<g>), or visiting certain unknown pages . . . and I say that because
I don't know *what* pages. I suspect some businesses let the adware
programs take over their sites to the extent the adware program can direct
the viewer's browser to whatever it is the business is paying the adware
company to get in front of people. In the case of of Zango, it's also
monitoring a viewer's web activities in order to determine where to send
the viewer.

I don't think the adware programs are vicious in the sense they try to
bring a computer down, but the practice is (I think) highly annoying, very
wrong, and an invasion of privacy not to be able to control your own
computer and "go where you want to go."
