I'd like to send a 'thank you' to whomever sent this information to me. The Lucretia is my ancestress, even though her first name is misspelled. I'm sorry I was unable to access this info as I don't have a subscription to Ancestry.com, and the first URL given is some sort of mail forwarding system. The name, Asa John, is the full name. Because there were so many, they often went by either first name only, middle name only, or initials. It's entirely probable that one of these 'Johns' could be whom I'm looking for. I need to find a male Dibble/Dibell, with a son 7 or 8 years old in 1900 census, as my ancestor was born in 1792. He is variously listed as being born in NY or VT. I believe this variation is due to the moving of the state lines, so he could be listed in either state. It was this man, born in 1792, who moved to Ohio. There are two John Dibbles (father and son) who moved there in 1811, and helped to settle the community of Denmark Twp, Ashtabula Co., Ohio. If this i!
s familiar to anyone, please, contact me. In 1811, the young John would have been about 19 years old, and could be the man I'm looking for. I simply cannot be certain just what name they were going by! Much more of this and I shall go mad! <grin> Thank you again, Bonnie Dibell

Check the rootsweb.com family tree at

This is what it provides:

If you poke around that tree you will see a reference to an 1850 Ohio census.
I checked the census and the above information is what the census provides
(although the census does not give specific birth years, just ages, and the
birth years given above do approximate the given ages). Specifics concerning
the census are:
Roll: M432_659 Township: Rome Twp Page: 465
I think, then, that your Lucretia may have been born in New York and to an
Isiah (Isaiah), rather than John Davis, as you believe. I did check Vermont
vital records for you, by the way, and this is what I found:
No records 1760-1908 under Asa, Lucretia/Lucy or Sylvia Dibble. There
were
some entries for John Dibble, but they did not seem close.
No Springfield, Vermont Dibble entries to 1908, period.
No birth or marriage records for Lucretia/Lecretia Dibble.
There is a birth entry for an apparent son of the John Davis you
believe was
Lucretia's father: a John Davis was born July 31, 1811 in
Springfield, father:
John Davis.
There is a birth entry for a Jonas Bass Davis, b. April 15, 1801 in
Springfield,
son of Joshua Davis. Jonas ended up living in Wethersfield, Vermont,
by the
way. A good guess would be that Joshua was John Davis' brother.
If you go to
http://worldconnect.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=davis_1&id=I2711
you will find an entry for a Daniel Davis born in Springfield May 31,
1800 to John
Davis; if this is accurate, Daniel would seem like another child of
the John
Davis you have in mind
If you go to
http://worldconnect.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=mommarsh&id=I2856
you will find an entry for a Catherine Davis born in Springfield January 22,
1802 (parents not listed), who may be another child of John (or Joshua or
someone else, of course). If Catherine were John's child, Catherine may have
been the name for his wife, as well.
I could not find any Asa Dibble or John Dibble census entries in Vermont from
1820-1850. There were several John Dibble entries in NY during this period,
and (only) one Asa Dibble in Boonville, Oneida County, NY, during at least
1830 and 1840 (he is gone by 1850). In the 1830 census, though, the only
female in the census (reproduced below) who could be Asa's wife would be
50-60, which makes her too old for your Lucretia. This further suggests to
me that the rootsweb entry above may have the correct family and Asa and
Lucretia moved to Ohio.
Here are the only census entries of interest I could find:
August 21, 1850 Springfield, Windsor County, Vermont census, p. 460:

1830 Boonville, Oneida County, NY census:
