Source, Rutland, Vt.Weekly Herald--21 Apr. 1800.

Vermont, Vergennes, 19 April, we hear from Milton, VT, 3 inst. (Apr),
Mr. Holgate's house burned. A maid and one of his children perished.
Day before Mr. and Mrs. Holgate had argument because she hid his papers
and she threatened to burn the house down and him with it.He saved one
child, couldn't find other. Man living in adjoining store threw himself
and Mrs.Holgate out the window. Inquest, Mrs. Holgate said maid started
it, but neighbor said maid's room not on fire at first. Mrs. Holgate
sent to jail.
