Subject: VAN HOOK line Southern NJ

Matthew, I haven't posted my line yet. Southern NJ presents a research
problem on the branch of the VAN HOOK family that did not migrate south. But
several of us are working diligently on it at the moment.

I am descended from James Laurence VAN HOOK, b. circa 1755, presumably NJ d.
1853 Jackson County, Iowa. His first wife was Elizabeth REEVES, b. 1779 NJ d.
1822 NJ. Until he moved to Iowa, there was no evidence of the first name
"James". All the NJ records show him as "Laurence." I was just admitted to
DAR based on his service as Captain of the NJ State troops. He later became a
doctor, having studied with his brother Benjamin VAN HOOK at the medical
school in Philadelphia.

Laurence and Elizabeth had several children. Their daughter Catherine VAN
HOOK b. 1811 NJ d. 1894 MO was married to William HEATON b. circa 1795 NJ d.
1848 WI. From there my line obviously continues with HEATONs.

As far as James Laurence's ancestry, the only hard evidence I have is a
Cumberland Co, NJ deed dated 6 MAR 1797 signed by "Lawrence Van Hook Jr. &
Elizabeth Van Hook" (my ancestors) and witnessed by "Lawrence Van Hook" (I
presume, his father). A possible theory is that this Lawrence Sr. (no dates)
was the son of Hendrick Van Hook and Deborah Parent. At this point I am not
sure how he ties into the line, if at all. There is also a local history
account that suggests that Drs. Lawrence and Benjamin's parents immigrated
from Germany directly during the 1700's which would mean they do not descend
from Arent Isaackson VAN HOECK at all! Ah, me! As Keister said, "There were
so many Lawrences ..."

So if anyone stumbles into NJ/PA information that would help us unravel the
mess, please help!
Thanks.
Chris Heaton, Your Northern Cousin
