Terry Van Hook asked about James Van Hook b. c. 1861 from Woodbury NJ.

We have a candidate for that slot. We are tracking down the VANHOOK lines
from Cumberland County NJ and there is a James Van Hook b. 1863 who might
fit the description. His father was Edmund Van Hook, a merchant from
Philadelphia and his mother was Eliza Hart from Ireland. If you look at a
map you will see that Woodbury NJ is just across the river from Philly. In
fact on a quiet night in Woodbury you can hear the planes take off from
Philadelphia airport.

James' grandfather was William Van Hook who owned a shipbuilding business
in the Kensington section of Phila. At this point we have a question to
settle. Who's Who in America says that Williams father was Benjamin Van
Hook but the DAR records say that his father was Captain Henry Van Hook
from the Cumberland County Militia.

Currently we have a professional genealogist working in Cumberland County
to sort out the connections. The dust has not settled yet but it looks
like the correct connection is via Henry. The next question is who was
Henry's father ? I am reasonably confident that the Van Hook lines in
Cumberland County all go back to the family of Arent in New Amsterdam. All
we have to do is nail down all the loose ends. That should be easy. Right
? Sure it is.
