Below is information about James Smith and his four sons, three of whom plus James moved from Union Co., Oregon to Adams and Franklin counties in Washington sometime prior to the 1900 census. The fourth son remained in Oregon and is the only son known to have married and fathered children. James and his wife, Rebecca Jane MATHEW SMITH, are my 2nd ggrandparents and I would like very much to hear from anyone who recognizes this family.
James SMITH was born on 14 Aug 1828 in Fountain Co., Indiana and died on 17 Nov 1914 in Kahlotus, Franklin Co., Washington. He was buried on 19 Nov 1914 in Delight Cem., near Lind in Adams Co. James, a widower since 1875, is found in the 1880 federal census still in Summerville, Union Co., Oregon, but by the 1900 census he was living in the Halton area of Adams Co., along with three of his sons, Thomas B. (usually went by T.B.), Charles Milton, and Laurence Houston (twins). By the 1910 census James had remarried a woman listed only as Elizabeth and was living in Kahlotus, Franklin Co., WA.
Thomas B. "T.B." SMITH was born in 1862 in Dallas Twp., Marion Co., Iowa. In the 1900 census he was living in McQueen Precinct of Adams Co., age 38, and single. The last reference I've found to him is in the 1912 Standard Atlas of Adams County, WA, where he's shown owning land with residence in Washtucna. No marriage has been found for him.
Charles Milton SMITH was born on 17 Nov 1872 in Summerville, Union, OR. Charles and Laurence Houston (below) were twins and owned land together. In the 1900 census Charles was single and living in the Halton area of Adams Co. After Laurence's death Charles inherited most of the estate. Some time after this he moved to Australia, where he was visited in 1937 by a newphew serving in the Navy. That is the last we know of Charles, and it is believed he died in Australia.
Laurence Houston SMITH was born on 17 Nov 1872 in Summerville, Union, OR. In the 1900 census he was single and living in the Halton area of Adams Co. He died on 20 Dec 1904 and was buried in Delight Cem., near Lind.. Laurence's will was probated in Adams Co and states he was a resident of Delight, Adams Co., at the time of his death.
James and Rebecca Jane had nine children altogether, including one other son, John Lewis SMITH, who continued to live in Umatilla Co., Oregon after his mother's death and his father's and brothers' move to Washington. John apparently is the only son to have married. According to a letter written by his father, John had six children at the time of his death, at least one of them a boy.
Thank you for any help,
Beth Perry Johnston
