According to the reference book "Fairbairn's Crests" by James Fairbairn:
the name Waddell is listed several times as having a crest.

WADDEL, England, a battle-axe, in pale ppr
WADDELL, England, Two battle-axes in saltier, ppr
WADDELL, Kent, a lamb, couchant, ppr., surmounted by a demi-eagle,
displayed, ppr
WADDELL, Scotland, a lions head, erased, gu. with he quote "Orna verum
- or - Adorn the truth."

Variant spellings are also registered:

WEDDALL, Middx, on battlements of a castle, az., a demi-lion, or,
(fixing the banner of St. George.)
WEDDELL, a hawk, hooded and bellied.
WEDDELL, Scotland, a horse's head. ar.
WEDDELL, Scotland, a lions head, erased, gu. the quote"Orna verum - or
- Adorn the truth."
WEDDEL or WEDDELL, England, a battle-axe, in pale ppr

Possible conclusions; That Waddells were English and over time joined
in English invasions of Scotland, where some remained, in and around
Edinburgh, hence the District tartan being associated with Waddell. I
doubt that Waddell is a true sept of a clan i.e.: Mac Duff. But a
Waddell may have married into the clan or just been associated with it.
That requires more research.
If any of you have this information please excuse the repetition.
