Well, my ancestor Frederick Leonhard(t) moved into Yakima county between
1871 and 1879. In 1883or4 the land he was in became Kittitas county (around
Ellensburg). I know that in the early 80's he and his friends/neighbors
were swapping mining claims around. As late as 1891 he patented land...so
at least until then there was land to be had for mainly sweat equity(
anybody know what the terms are/were for a land patent?). I think by 1900
the area would still have been considered the exciting "Frontier" where
there would be all kinds of rumors of striking it rich (whether mining,
logging, or farming..or the first utility, railroads, creamery, bakery,
etc.).
That's by two bits, anyways.
