Today's gleanings;
Lynda Rimas, in what she terms is blizzardly cold Amaranth, Canada, on
<,ca> asked me to keep an eye out for a Richard SHERRY born
c.1804 at ST. CHAD'S SHREWSBURY. He did a runner, Lynda - no sign of him at
all - didn't want anyone to be pouring water on his head at the font and
certainly did not want to be married or buried there either. Perhaps the
smog and smoke of the city was too much for him! Have to get the geny
detectives onto this one.
But, there were some interesting developments at St. Chad, nevertheless.

Patti Flyn Heimsness on <> was very good at giving her
Pritchard details at St. Chad's, and wanted to know if some of the female
children of Samuel & Mary Pritchard had survived to marry. I rather enjoyed
this one. Patti, here are all the details that will dovetail into what you
already have, and you may get a few surprises. By the way, there were
"millions" of Pritchards at St. Chad's. Rather exhausting just to look at
them! Rather like Smith down south! :))

p1282 6 Jan 1767 Richard s/o Samuel and Mary Pritchard baptized.
p1295 10 Aug 1768 Samuel - as above
p1309. 22 Jun 1770 William - as above
p1327. 14 Jul 1772 Mary - as above - but now the register lists the parents
as Mr. Samuel and Mrs. Mary Pritchard. Obviously they had attained some
higher level of social significance in the community by that date! Patti
tells me that Samuel was a Burgess.
p1340. 30 Sept 1774 Ann d/o Samuel & Mary Pritchard baptized (I note you
have her listed as Hannah. Depends what records you read, I guess!)
p1355. 1 Jul 1776 Edward - as above
p1361. 7 Jan 1777 John - as above - (Samuel is now listed as "hatter." A
gentlemen's hatter, no doubt! Doesn't that put a spin on things?)
p1363. 23 Feb 1777 Maria d/o Samuel and Elean: (sic) Pritchard, baptized

p1377. 18 May 1778 Elizabeth d/o Samuel and Mary Pritchard baptized. Born
24th April
p1389. Laetitia d/o Samuel & Eleanor, baptized, born 14th. Woops - forgot
to write down the date. Must have been, just at that time, the thunder
rolled and I looked up through the clear glass roof to see the grey clouds
rolling by. :)) Didn't rain, anyway. Shame. Anyway, she doesn't belong to
Samuel and Mary, so let's just forget her for the time being. Poor
Laetitia. Probably a cousin.

all those chidlren! He must have been exhausted!)

p1799. 5 Oct 1773 Samuel Pritchard and Eleanor Brownhill married
p1832. 22 Jun 1789 Samuel Pritchard and Elizabeth Hill married
p1884. 25 Feb 1805 Samuel Pritchard and Ann Nickless [signs Nicholass]
married. Wit. John Hughes and John Saxon jnr. (possibly connected with St.
Chad's)
No more entries concerning a Samuel Pritchard in the transcribed register.

Re. the children
p1538. 30 Aug 1792 Lett. Pritchard age 13 buried
p1507. 3 Sep 1789 Mary Pritchard buried (could be an elder person, of coursel)
p1907. 4 Dec 1810 Francis Pritchard parish of Buttington, Montgomeryshire,
and Elizabeth Hughes married. Wit. Thomas Humphrey and Martha
Pritchard. (Seems the younger Martha survived at least to this date. What
is the connection to Buttington, near Welshpool? Cousin, perhaps?).
The other girls obviously married later, or married out of the parish.
Transcripts end 1812.

Patti was also interested in Mary Harris's mother - a Mary deVisschers and
wondered what this latter name was. Well, seems to be Flemish or Dutch as
in De Visscher - DeViss(ch)er, and possibly, but not necessarily, Jewish.
Eventually comes down most likely to Visser, and then to the common English
version of Fisher. So, all you Fisher's out there (apart from those named
so because of their occupation) look to Belgium and Holland for your
possible earlier heritage! Have fun searching, anyway!

Mike McCarthy on <> needed some help with an Edward Owen
b. 28 Oct 1756, at Albrighton. Not much, I'm afraid, Mike, but these two
entries at ALBRIGHTON.

Justine ORME on <> was buttering me up with promises of
strawberry jam, etc., but wanted some info re. Edward Vaughan who married
an Ann somebody, before 1670 and were resident at Crickheath around that
time. Ahh, well, Justine, I figured that very close by was the parish of
Kinnerley (a very much used parish for baptisms and marriages) where my
BATHER's hailed from, and if one was lucky......... very
lucky........ Anyway, you may be lucky by default. Although there was no
listing of your Edward and Ann, there were some very interesting entries of
Vaughans there, who are probably connected.

Compliments: the Clwyd Family History Society researchers, typists,
collators, readers, printers, etc. Lovely folk. You don't get much better
than this!

N.B. I have found numerous errors in the indexes of these Shopshire Parish
Registers as transcribed by the Shropshire Parish Register Society which
was mainly in the very early 1900s, and at least, as far as I can gather up
to 1936, in that - in the index the person by that name is just not there
on the page. Blank, blank, so to speak. Again, when discovering persons by
random methods, they appear on the page of baptisms, etc. with their
parents, but they do NOT appear in the index. (So, we are all human, are we
not, and we all make mistakes.) One Priscilla Pritchard, though shown on
the transcribed pages ofthe register, does not appear anywhere in the
index. Thus, after her recorded baptism, if she died and it was not
recorded in the index, how on earth would you find her burial? So, what is
the lesson to be learnt from this? As always, go back to the original
registers, go back to the microfilms provided by the LDS folk where you
will see with your own individual eyes the early papers with the original
ink entries. It is all very well to rely upon transcriptions, and
transcriptions from transcriptions, but in the end the only real
satisfaction you can have, and the only way to prove things out, is to get
the original registers in your very own hands. Otherwise, you may be
barking up the wrong tree! Personally, I have never accepted anything
without having proved it out eventually with the original
registers. Remember this also, every time you look at the IGI. I respect
it. It is a great and marvellous tool, but it is not perfect. It was put
together by humans with the same faults and frailites that you and I have.
Let's face it - errors abound in genealogy. Probably more so than you would
care, or like, to think.
