Subject: Jesse and Susan Wall's children, Ala.
Date: Sun, 21 May 2000 19:01:31 EDT
I had originally thought, after getting the first info about the estate
records, that Martha Powell was a child, BUT, after going over the info I got
in Elba, Ala. on the estate of Jesse Wall and going by the article in
"Memorial Record of Alabama" on their son, Jesse Harrison Wall, we have:
1)they had eleven children
2}nine reached adulthood
3)seven were living in 1883 when the estate was final
4)five were living in 1893 when the article was written
=ones who died early would be James {Jesse' surviving heirs not named Wall}
and unknown child
=leaving nine to reach adulthood. Elizabeth Wall Majors, Mary Wall Snellgrove
Matthews, Nancy A. Wall Hatton, Shadrach Wall, Carolyn Wall Longford, Martha
Antoinette Wall Clements/Clem, Austin David Wall, Jesse Harrison Wall, and
George Washington Wall.
=Shadrach died in the Civil War leaving eight
=Since the Powell and Longford and Beasley children share one of eight parts
they must be Caroline's children as she is the only one left unaccounted for.
We know the other seven were alive in 1883 from the estate papers.
=the five alive in 1893 when Jesse' article was written would be, Antoinette,
A.D., Jesse, George, and Mary{by default as others were known dead by then}.
Now, did Caroline marry a Longford and a Beasley? Was Martha Powell a
Longford or Beasley? As she is over 21 she is probably married. Any
suggestions?
Also of note, Mary was a Snellgrove in 1882 when she signed a deed with Susan
and the other children then she was a Matthews in 1883 for the final estate
papers. I had found 1860 Dale County, Alabama census, page 652; J.{M or W}
Matthews 27 Ga, Mary 25 Ga, Nancy P. 1 Ala, Thomas Matthews 18 Ga. labor.
Jesse and Susan Wall were on page 651 and that Mary was the correct age so I
though that Mary was our Mary because the first info on the estate had Mary
Matthews. But the deed record tosses that one out. ???
Still thinking,
Judy
