In answer to my inquiry on the Wallace List: sent 3/12/98

The following received from Richard Engel;

Hello,

I saw your letter through the rootsweb. It caught my attention because
I am a descendant of a Wallace line & I was born & raised in
Canonsburg, PA (spelled w/ one 'n'). I don't believe we have any
connection because I have much info about my Wallaces. The ones you
mentioned don't fit my lines. Although, I have an obituary of a James
Wallace of Canonsburg, PA that is not of my line. If you would be
interested I could e-mail it to you.

Respectfully,

Richard Engel
Mt. Lebanon PA

Hi Richard

Thank you for responding to my Wallace List E-mail. I am
interested in any WallaceÕs of the Canonsburg Area in the period of
the late 1700Õs since we believe that our Great Grandfather, John
Wallace, and his brother William, were born in the area.
There is also a possibility that John Wallace learned his trade
of Silversmith and Clockmaker from a Clock Builder in Canonsburg

A Mr. Alexander Cook, born 1/4/1760 at St. Monace, Fifepshire,
Scotland was a Clockmaker in Canonsburg, PA in the late 1700Õs.
Mr Cook learned his trade of silversmith in Scotland
He emigrated to America in 1783 and lived for a time in
the State of MD.
He married Miss Alizannah Adams of Abington, Hartford Co.
MD Jan/2. 1787.
By 1790, the Chartiers Twp. tax list shows him as a
resident Clockmaker.

There is a Tall Case Clock at the Yale Library signed Alexander
Cook and Wm. Wallace, Canonsburg which is dated 1795 to 1798. There
are 5 other Alexander Cook, Canonsburg clocks known but none of them
have Òand Wm. Wallace,Ó shown. We have been unable to find any other
information about who this Wm. Wallace was. We have wondered if he is
our John and Wm WallaceÕs father or some other relative and that John
Wallace learned his trade in Canonsburg.
Our Great Grandfather, John Wallace, lived in the Canonsburg
area until he moved to Pittsburgh and opened up his business shortly
after 1815. He is listed in the city tax records by 1818.

Regards,

Baird Wallace
