I am researching a 1797 group migration from Hardy CO VA to St. Clair CO
IL. When this large group, variously reported to be 126 or 154 persons,
arrived in Illinois they encountered a terrible epidemic of "a
pestilential fever supposed to be contagious" and half of them died. An
old account reports that a Dr. Wallace labored valiantly to save those
who fell ill. Does anyone know of a physician named Wallace who would
have been at the New Design settlement (site in present Monroe CO IL) in
1797? Or who might have traveled with the group from Hardy CO VA? Or
who might have come from nearby Kaskaskia, a military post in the
Revolutionary War? Please contact direct. Thanks, Nora Tocus
