Hi!

The DNA project maps the male Y chromosome in men. They have discovered that
the male Y chromosome passes almost identically from father to son through
about 500 generations before it genetic drift causes minor mutations. They have
found 12 unique places on the chromosome that they can look at and classify
and then compare to others. The information is then put into a data base and
becomes accessible to other who are testing also. (I hope that is a reasonable
explanation.)

All is not lost for women though, being one myself I just tested my brother
for my maiden name. They also have a project for women but because we mostly
research surnames it makes sense to trace male lineage because of the name
passing down.

The test is a simple swab that a man rubs on the inside of his cheek and they
run about $99 for a group rate, which is good price from what have found
(there are 2 other places doing the tests and they are running around $350 for a
non-group rate).

I have asked Family Tree DNA for information about starting a WALLACE project
but am pondering whether I'm up to the task of being a Group Administrator.
If enough people are interested, I will definitely consider it. My stepfather
is a WALLACE and is very interested in doing this after he saw the results I
got back from my brother's test.

If you'd like more information I suggest checking out their website:
