Hi All, just getting around to reading Hazel's note about the YOTWB. First
of all, I want everyone to know that I am thrilled to see your positive
response to this initiative to have Year of the War Bride in every province,
and after the election, federally. The only way it's going to happen is if
we all work together with one goal - to have the YOTWB declared in each
province and then federally by whoever is in power. I see a lot of you are
talking about having events in your communities. Here's an idea: every one
of you lives in a city with a mayor and all of our provinces has a Lt.
Governor. Write to your mayor, write to your Lt. Governor and ask them to
put on an event in honour of YOTWB 2006. I'm sure they will say yes. These
are just two small ideas, but if done across the country, they show that
we're all working together. In Fredericton, where I live, the mayor will be
hosting a tea for the War Brides in council chambers. (I haven't asked the
NB Lt. Governor yet, but I know he'll say yes. )
I welcome your ideas and your contributions. The idea of a Canada wide
sponsor is fantastic, so don't feel that you are trampling on any of my
plans, we are in this together!! Joan, if you are going to pursue this,
just write to me and we can talk about it, perhaps bring some other people
in on the idea who may know how to do this. Cc me in on your correspondence
so I can spread the word to the others I am dealing with in each province.
This is what I have been doing in the provinces, Manitoba for example, I
have been writing to whoever is in a position to see this happen and cc'ing
a long list of people in the particular province.
I think it's great for individuals to take the initiative. Please do so!!
Just let me know about it so I can put it up on the CanadianWarBrides.com
website in the section about the Anniversary. I think it's great that people
are taking it upon themselves to contact their MLAs or their MPs - the more
the merrier I say. Just let me know who you contacted so I can put it up on
the site and then we can exert a little "moral persuasion" because the
politician's name is on the site.
As for Saskatchewan, in the Anniversary section of my website you will see
that the Sasktachewan gov't has received an official request from the
Saskatchwan War Brides Association and the request is making its way through
"the process", as I was told by email on December 19.
See http://www.canadianwarbrides.com/anniversary-canada.asp
December 19, 2005 - Confirmation from Saskatchewan government that they have
received a request from the Saskatchewan War Brides Association to declare
2006 Year of the War Brid.
"[T]here is an established Proclamations Policy within Executive Government
and the request received from the Saskatchewan War Brides Association for
consideration of this proclamation is being prepared for consideration
within that process. and the request received from the Saskatchewan War
Brides Association for consideration of this proclamation is being prepared
for consideration within that process."
So in fact, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, British Columbia, Ontario and now Nova
Scotia are pressing their respective provincial goverments to enact the Year
of the War Bride in their provinces. We need someone in Alberta, Prince
Edward Island, Quebec and Newfoundland. Any takers?
Federally, I encourage every single one of you to contact your MP, as I said
way back about this issue, the more of us asking our MPs to carry the torch,
the more likely it is to happen. Joan mentioned some time back that she was
going to follow up with her MLA or MP? Joan, any news there? I know that
Linda Granfield has spoken to her MP and so have I. Just take a look at the
anniversary section of my website and you'll see everything is there. I hope
I haven't missed anyone, I'm so busy these days organizing the event at Pier
21 for February 9. I can use all the help I can get!! Does anyone want to
take on the Federal government???
Hazel, I guess I'm going to phone Doreen, president of the Alberta
Association. I had asked Eswyn Lyster to call her and Eswyn did but perhaps
Doreen needs some more information to make the official request. I've just
been so busy, this is becoming a full time job and unfortunately, I already
have one of those. Oh, to do this war brides work for a living, it would be
my dream job!!
Thanks everyone, keep up the good work!! There is more information available

Hi!
I think we have to be careful not to cross up Melynda's plans and efforts
for recognition of all Canadian War Brides. I just wrote to Melynda. I am
in the position of not knowing what is going on with Alberta War Brides. I
don't know whether President Doreen is getting on to this Year of the
Warbride effort or not. Let's not make any definite plans until we find out
which provinces are going to support Melynda's efforts and declare 2006 the
YOTWB!
Your ideas are good Joan. Stay in touch.
Hazel
