England not Canada? Was that usual? >
As I was telling Brian in a private email, Canadian soldiers who took their
discharge in England were required to sign away their right for free passage
back to Canada. Over 15,000 men did so. However, later on many of these men
wrote to the Commissioner of Emigration in London (J. Obed Smith) requesting
help to return to Canada. There is a microfilm of such lists at the Library
and Archives of Canada.
