Thank you both for your similar suggestions. I had tried Palfrey
myself as an alternative to Panfrey, but the notion of a Stoat holding
a horse in its mouth somehow didn't seem quite right - unless there is
some deep significance which escapes me.
I think my next step will be to obtain, through the inter-county
library loan service, Bartlett's book from which the description of
Arms was taken - to see if there hasn't been one transcription too
many ! He might possibly have explained a Panfrey in his book.
We'll see.
If that doesn't work, I could always write to the College of Arms.
I can see this taking another 3 months to resolve !
I shall be going to Mancetter in the near future to, inter alia,
look at the tomb. However, as it is a sandstone tomb, I doubt that
there will be much left in the way of detail to see - after 302 years
! The tomb was still there in 1985 when the memorial inscription
survey was carried out, and the inscriptions were still legible - to
some degree.
