Subject: [WAR] Odd Occupations - Nurse Girl
Date: Wed, 2 Feb 2000 17:45:49 +0100

Hi All,

In the 1851 census CD, I came across the occupation of Nurse Girl, I
was surprised, as the girl I was looking for was only 8. I got to
looking, and there are 369 of them on the CD.

At first I thought they must be the equivalent of baby sitters, but
not all the households had babies (only valid if the girl was not
with her family). The ages varied from 7 to 25 or so, but the most
common were between 11 and 15. There was one aged 1, which is
either an error by the census taker, or the transcriber, or perhaps
that person was the subject of nursing, not the nurse.

Does anyone have a more exact description of what this occupation
does ??
