Most probably, simply a matter of going where work was -- Robert D
and others will have much more idea of what kind of building projects
were going on in Brum at this time, but the most obvious answer is
that he saw an advertisement and applied, or maybe he was working for
a company that had won a contract in Brum.
This kind of mobility is by no means unusual. My STEPHENS gggps were
born in Cornwall, married in Plymouth (where my ggm was born), then
moved in succession to Derby, Croydon, Sutton Coldfield, possibly
Evesham or Gloucester (or possibly both, or possibly neither!),
Tewkesbury (where my ggps were married), and West Bromwich (where my
gggf died in 1905). My gggm died in Birmingham in 1935, aged 90. My
gggf was a coachman, so I can only assume the family moved where he
found work.
Any Brum lister recognising this STEPHENS saga, please get in touch!
