Hello Neil,

The universally-loathed "West Midlands Metropolitan County" was born on the
auspicious date of All Fools Day 1974 - created under section 70 of The
Local Government Act 1972.

It would seem to've "done a Yugoslavia" in the 1990s - albeit with much less
violence - although what passes as the Post Office still maintains it
exists.

As for a Site that charts County - and other - Boundary Changes, I'd also be
glad to know of one. But two useful Handbooks are Frederic A Youngs Jr's
"Guide to the Local Administrative Units of England", vols 1 & 2. They run
to some 1,750 pages between them, and sadly do not include any maps.

HTH

Gus

Can someone tell me when the 'West Midlands' came into being?
In recording some BMD's in my software, I'd like to know when for example
Coventry changed from being in Warwickshire to the WM
Is there a good site to refer to about county changes in general?
Thanks
Neil
