Greetings Cousins, Wednesday 11 July 2001
Well, the mystery of the grave sites of John Washburn III and Rebecca have
been verified to be still setting in the Bridgewater, Massachusetts, cemetery
in the middle of town. Samuel Washburn's [stone] maker has been raised and
and reset (inclosed) in a solid concrete block to the "rear center" of John III
and Rebecca's marker. The "Washburn Family Web Site" that is authored by
"another" Chuck Washburn [ref:
http://home.earthlink.net/~cwashburn/history.html ]
"does not" reference John Washburn III's grave marker only Samuel's and
Rebecca's. All three are placed on a small hill under a large tree
quite separate
from all the other grave sites in the Bridgewater Cemetery. There are many,
many Washburn's buried there....but these three: John III, Rebecca and Samuel
are placed much higher and more remote then the rest of the grave sites.
For your reference: Many of these markers are well worn due to
weather erosion,
but John III's marker can still be read as well as Rebecca's as being
his spouse. I
also have located a copy of Dr. Lapham's Family Register that puts to rest any
doubt of the marriage of John III to Rebecca Lapham. I also turned over to the
Mayflower Society in Plymouth, Massachusetts...to the Historian General of the
Society, a copy of this document. I have since received a letter of
thanks to tell
me that they have archived the "Lapham Family Register" in their
research library.
The Historian General acknowledged that there was difficulty with
this connection
until I presented "documented proof" to erase any doubt. She was
grateful of my
contribution...as I did it for "all" researchers so they may benefit
in the future.
More to come of my genealogical research trip East after I get caught
up on all my
correspondence.
