Dear Washburn(e) Cousins and Friends:

On this day, I am sure many of you are taking time to remember
the events
of December 7, 1941, as I am. My father, Jack Washburne, told me this
morning that he remembers being in a theater, two days after his 19th
birthday, when he heard the news that would change his life. He
would later
go home that day to see his father, Willard Haynes Washburne
(1892-1962) and
his visiting Uncle from New York, Charles Shepard Washburn
(1890-1972) (Uncle
Charlie, who dropped the "e" from our last name, was a veteran
press agent
for George M. Cohan, Billy Rose, Mike Todd, George Abbot, John
Barymore, Al
Jolson, Sonja Henie and Dante the magician -- see his obituary in
the NEW
YORK TIMES on January 10, 1972) listening to the attack by Japan on
the
radio. Early the next year, my father, who graduated with the highest
military rank in his High School class from Morgan Park Military
Academy in
Chicago, would enlist in the army and, at one time, was the
youngest officer
during World War II. On this day, I take time to remember his
sacrifice for
our country and all others who served our country.

Moreover, on this anniversary of the attack, I am struck by
the many
comparisons in today's paper between the tragic events of that day
sixty
years ago and the events of September 11. I find it even more
ironic to learn
this week that the men who were the Presidents of country during
those tragic
days, Franklin Roosevelt and George Bush, were cousins and related
to our
family. As an historian by profession, I would be also interested
in other
accounts of Washburn(e)s who served our country during times of war
and asked
that you forward your stories to me at this e-mail address or by
writing to
me at:

Thank you!

Sincerely,
Mark Washburne
