Dear Washburn Cousins:

Besides teaching history and political science for a college in New Jersey, I
am a member of a lecture circuit (AMERICANA LECTURES) in the Garden State. My
agent has booked me to do four lectures in April and May on getting started
in genealogy, the Washburn family, and, of course, my book on our famous
relative, Civil War Congressman Elihu Washburne. In preparation for my talks,
I have recently purchased a family tree software program and have begun to
fill my computer with names and stories from all the branches of my family.

My introduction to the earliest members of our Washburn family came from
James Davenport's book, THE WASHBOURNE FAMILY OF LITTLE WASHBOURNE AND
WICHENFORD IN THE COUNTY OF WORCESTER (London: Methuen & Co., 1907), who
traced the family back to Sir Roger Washbourne, who was a knight in the
1200s. I had not returned to the subject for a few years and was surprised to
learn that some genealogical web sites had gone well beyond Sir Roger
Washbourne to our ancestors in France and Norway. In following a path on
Ancestry.com, I found postings to a Viking, Hialti D'Hauteville, who lived in
the 800s in France. The following is his line to John Washburn and our other
earliest settlers in America:

Of course, all genealogical research should be taken with a grain of salt.
The only sure way to know if these are our relatives is to dig them up and
have a DNA comparison test done with us. Even the best documented lines can
be foiled by the admiration a cheating wife might have had for her milkman!
Nonetheless, it is exciting to me that attempts have been made to connect our
family and that our tree now expands some thirty-five generations and 1150
years from Hialti D'Hauteville's birth in 852!

Happy Easter!

Your cousin,
Mark Washburne
