Albert H. Bingham, 96, a life-long Skagit County resident and Sedro-Woolley community leader, died Tuesday, February 22, 1992, in Sedro-Woolley.
He was born Nov. 8, 1895, in Sedro-Woolley, the youngest of three sons of pioneer banker Charles E. Bingham and Julia Bingham. He graduated from Sedro-Woolley High school and was a graduate of Princeton University.
During World War I, he served in the intelligence department of the U. S. Army. He received a number of commendations for bravery and also was awarded the Croix de Guerre, the French medal of honor.
Following his discharge from the military, Mr. Bingham attended the University of London. He returned to Sedro-Woolley where he began his career in banking at the family-owned C. E. Bingham State Bank. Following the purchase of the bank by Seafirst, Mr. Bingham continued working there as Seafirst vice president and manager of the Sedro-Woolley branch. He retired in 1960.
His marriage to Lena Abel took place in Sedro-Wooley in 1922. She preceded him in death in 1974.
Mr. Bingham was a charter member of the Sedro-Woolley Rotary Club and also belonged to the Knights of Pythias, the Sedro-Woolley Eagles for 71 years and the George Baldridge Post of the American Legion for 76 years. He held officer positions in all of those organizations. In addition, he was a volunteer firefighter for 50 years. An avid golfer, he also belonged to the Skagit Golf and Country Club.
He served one term in the Washington State Legislature.
Mr. Bingham is survived by a nephew and his wife, Charles and Rita Bingham of Renton; two nieces, Mary Jane Booth of Tacoma and Judy Jones and her husband, Bud, of Sedro-Woolley; grandnephews Charles Bingham, Albert Bingham, Jim Bingham, Tom Jones, Bill Bingham and George Bingham; grandnieces Mary Elizabeth Robinson, Julia Anderson, Jane Thompson, Sally Flight and Laurie Miller; and a number of great-grandnieces and great-grandnephews. He is also survived by his care-giver and companion, Jim Hyatt.
He was preceded in death by two young sons, Albert and George Bingham, and by two brothers, Quinby and Charles Bingham.
