On 29 Sept. 1817, EDWARD BALDWIN, of Wigan, Lancashire England,
married Ellen HARDACRE, who was born in Wigan in 1799. Wigan was a
coal mininig area on the west coast of England. One of their
childen, DANIEL BALDWIN, b. 1820, moved to Lyre Townland, County
Waterford. I had, until recently, been unable to locate the Irish
origins of my great grandfather, Daniel Baldwin. Now I know why;
he was English. He married Catherine Mary RIELY (REILLY),
daughter of Edmond REILLY, in 1843, born in Clonoulty, Rossmore,
County Tipperary.
Could someone describe to me where the Townland of Rossmore, Civil
Parish of Clonoulty, is located in Tipperary? Since it is in the
PLU of Cashel, perhaps it is in the area of Cashel Town? My
Michelin map shows none of these locations except Cashel.
They had eleven Baldwin children, all baptised in St. Brigid
Church, Kilrossanty RC Parish, County Waterford. My grandfather,
Daniel Edward Baldwin, who was the youngest of these, went to
Massachusetts and married Etta Elizabeth CROWLEY in 1903. Of the
other ten, at least one, Denis Baldwin, when to Western Australia,
where he died in 1899.
It has been a slow and complicated journey to chase down these
very mobile ancestors of mine. I am learning about my own
tendancy to want to move somewhere else. Any additional
information is eagerly anticipated.
