Subject: New Welcome Message.. Please Read and Save...
Date: Tue, 08 Apr 1997 08:30:36 -0500

<fontfamily><param>Times New Roman</param><bigger>Hi everyone!

Below you will find the new WELCOME message. It says basically all the
same

things it did when you first subscribed to the list, but it now contains
my

address and it may contain the names of some new mentors to help you

further if you have problems. Please discard the previous WELCOME
message.

(The one I know you all saved <<grin>) Hang onto this message!!! It
will

tell you exactly what to do if you ever have problems. In all seriousness
I

suggest printing it out and saving it in a file folder.(Which, if your
desk

looks like mine, you'll never be able to find ;)) It does contain some

important information re: commands and other list functions.

Thanks,

Becky

************************************************************

WELCOME to the WATSON Surname list.

My name is Becky Lane. I'm the "owner" of this list. That means

I'm responsible for keeping it running as smoothly as possible and

setting some rules for its operation.

============================================================

******** YOUR RESPONSIBILITIES********

That's right, you have some responsibilities, too. This is a cooperative

effort. PLEASE READ THE FOLLOWING CAREFULLY. I'll be frank, if you
don't

have the time to read this message, you don't have the time to be on a

mailing list!

1. KEEP THIS MESSAGE!!! I recommend printing it and putting the paper

where you can find it. Files on a hard disk get lost (as if paper

doesn't, but...)

2. READ THIS MESSAGE. Yes, it's a little long, but you don't have to

memorize it (that's why you're saving it). It's hard to make it

short and tell you what you need to know.

3. Don't be afraid of all this. Using a computer is a little harder
than

just knowing where the power switch is, but anyone can do this with

a little effort and by following instructions.

4. FOLLOW INSTRUCTIONS!!!!! - to the letter. If you leave something out
of

a command or put something extra in, it probably won't work.

5. If you decide to leave the list, make sure your name is removed
(more

on this below). The server that sends you this list handles
thousands

of messages a day. If your address becomes "bad" (for instance, you

quit AOL but we think you're still there) then we start getting

bounced messages. We get thousands a day now. Please don't make it

worse.

6. REMEMBER THREE ADDRESSES:

a. IF YOU NEED HELP, CONTACT ME. My address is

b. To post a message to this list (so it goes to all other

subscribers) send it to

c. TO SEND A COMMAND (commands are discussed below) send a message
to:

7. DO NOT FLAME PEOPLE (SEND ARGUMENTATIVE OR CRITICAL MESSAGES) ON THE

LIST. IF YOU ARE FLAMED, DO NOT RESPOND VIA THE LIST!!!! Flamers will
be

warned once and then removed. If you have a problem with someone
flaming

you publicly or privately, please contact me at

8. Please stay on topic. Just below is a description about what this

list is for. Please stay close to that subject.

9. Most email programs can send attachments (attached files). DON'T
send

these to the list. (Some programs will send a small attachment with

your signature or something like that and you can't shut that off;

that's okay.) This isn't a problem for the mail server, but these
can

cause some subscribers' machines to lock up, make them lose all
their

mail, even crash their hard drive!

A GEDCOM file can be a huge attachment; so can an encoded graphics

file (if you don't know what those are, you probably won't be
sending

them, but a lot of you will understand these terms). If you want
people

to have these, announce them via the list and have people send you a

private email requesting them.

******** ARE YOU GETTING MAIL? ********

If you're reading this, then you've signed up for this list.

IF YOU DO NOT START RECEIVING MAIL SOON, SEND

See if your name is on the list. If not, please let me know at

********WHAT IS THIS LIST?********

This list is for the exchange of information regarding the WATSON
surname.

While we will mostly be discussing genealogical information on the WATSON
list,

sometimes we do stray to other topics. This does not happen often so
don't

get worried <<grin>. We will do our best to stay on the subject of
WATSON'S

as best we can. Please do not FLAME anyone.

==============================================================

******** WHAT OTHER LISTS ARE THERE?********

For a list of known Internet newsgroups linked to genealogy, send this

message to :

(nothing in the subject line)

(and in message body put this)

Because of the number of lists they have there now it has become
necessary to

make up several files for obtaining lists-of-lists here.

The commands to get the files here all begin with the word SEND

LIST1.TXT has info on general interest (non-genealogy) lists

LIST2.TXT has info on state/regional/non-family lists

LIST3.TXT has info on families A&B

LIST4.TXT has info on families C&D

LIST5.TXT has info on families E-G

LIST6.TXT has info on families H-K

LIST7.TXT has info on families L-N

LIST8.TXT has info on families O-R

LIST9.TXT has info on families S&T

LIST10.TXT has info on families U-Z

Send your message to

SEND LIST1.TXT

SEND LIST2.TXT

EXIT

REMEMBER: Start the command with SEND

SOME PEOPLE HAVE TROUBLE DOWNLOADING THESE FILES.

These sizes will change almost every day:

NOTE: These lists 1) change all the time 2) may change in how they're
made

up. Some services, like Juno, have a problem with big files.

(Anytime you send a command - and that's what this is - it goes to

and it should be the first line in the body of your message.)

==============================================================

******** I DON"T LIKE WHAT SOME PEOPLE ON THE LIST SAY********

The list is not moderated. Any message sent to it is automatically

bounced back out to everyone on the list. While I in no way want

to stifle free discussion, as list owner I reserve the right to step

in if a flame war erupts, if some thread (a series of messages on the

same subject) becomes tedious for other subscribers, or if someone

becomes unseemly (excessive use of profanity, for instance).

The most important key on your keyboard is the DELETE key. If you don't

like a message, delete it. Don't send a cutting or snide remark back to

the list. The rest of us don't want to read it, and it just adds to

the clutter of useless messages. If you feel there is a serious problem

caused by someone, send me a message at

I understand that we do not all feel the same way regarding certain

subjects, but hey folks we're in America. It is not the place of anyone
on

this list to try to impose their views on others. And as for what is
and

isn't acceptable subject material on this list, I make that decision.
If

you see a subject that you don't feel is relevant to the list, DELETE
it.

If I feel it is too far off-topic, I will let the sender know by
private

email.

If you have a personal message for someone, please send it to their

address, not the list server address. Any mail sent to the WATSON list
will

automatically be sent to everyone on the list.

==============================================================

********COMMANDS********

To subscribe to the list, send a message to

and put

SUB WATSON

in the body of the message (not the subject line). You can put anything

you want in the subject; it's ignored.

To UNSUBSCRIBE, send a message to

with

UNSUB WATSON

in the body. DO NOT SEND THESE MESSAGES TO

! This will only send a message to

everyone on the list and won't get your request handled.

To post a message to the list, send it to

A DIGEST is several messages bundled together and sent all at once.

You can set digest mode by sending

SET WATSON DIGEST

to

To go back to regular mail mode, send

SET WATSON NODIGEST

to

Some people will enjoy digests more than others. Digests are MIME

compliant. I can't explain that here, but many email programs will

read the digest and give you an index to messages. If your program

doesn't, you may want to go back to regular mail.

To turn off mail while on vacation, send

SET WATSON NOMAIL

to

To turn it back on again, send

SET WATSON MAIL

to

IF YOU HAVE SET YOURSELF TO NOMAIL, please use the SET WATSON MAIL

command; do NOT subscribe again.

==============================================================

********ARE THE MESSAGES ARCHIVED(SAVED) SOMEWHERE?********

You can retrieve archived messages. Send this command to

SEND FILELIST

and then carefully follow the instructions in that file.

==============================================================

*******WHO ELSE IS ON THE LIST********

Send

REVIEW WATSON

to

and you'll get a copy of the list's subscribers back.

==============================================================

********HOW SOON SHOULD I GET AN ANSWER?*******

When you send a message to the list, you will get a copy back (since

you're a subscriber, too). The software used here can't be set

differently.

When you SUB, UNSUB, ask for a REVIEW, or SEND for something, you'll

get an answer back from MAISER. (MAISER stands for MAIl SERver, by the

way.)

Depending on a lot of factors, you may get an answer in 5 minutes or 5

hours, sometimes even longer. We may be very busy here. Sometimes

**your** service rejects messages for awhile. GENERALLY, if you don't

have an answer in 12 hours, suspect a problem and try again.

==============================================================

********I'M HAVING A PROBLEM*******

Send me a message, but be specific. I can't help if you just say,

"I'm having a problem, help me." Tell me what it is. Tell me what

you did or tried to do. If you received some kind of error message,

send it to me.

If you get an error message from MAISER, it will tell you what the

error is.

A LOT of problems are caused by:

You tried to UNSUB and MAISER says you're not a subscriber, yet you're

getting mail.

REVIEW the list (see above) and see how your address appears
there.

Send yourself a message and see how your address appears in the

header of the message. **Usually** (if you're getting this error)

they won't be the same. IPs (Internet service providers) are

notorious for changing your address, adding "mail" or "pop" or

some other term to it - or taking it away. If that is the case,

all you can do is notify me to help you.

You get a "list not known" or similar error.

Check how you're spelling the list's name. Common errors include:

New York Roots (it is supposed to be NewYork-ROOTS)

VA-ROOTS (that's on another server)

KYROOTS (ditto)

IL-ROOTS (it's ILLINOIS-ROOTS)

Get the idea?

You get a "bad command" error.

Check you spelling. I see "unscribe", "un-scibe" and about every

other variation imaginable. You have to spell stuff right!
