Searching for two (perhaps four) legatees of Richmond Watson estate in
Edgefield District, SC.

In 1818 Richmond purchased from Elijah Watson 252 acres on Clouds Creek in
Edgefield Dist. After Richmond’s death (after 20 Nov 1822, before 22 Jan 1828)
his land was divided thus: 1/3 went to his wife, Sarah; the rest was
divided into ten parts. In deeds I have found eight of those legatees:
Abner, Amos, Archibald, Celia Padgett, Mary , Michael, Milly, and Temperance
Howard. All but Temperance are stated to be children of Richmond. However,
Temperance did relinquish her rights of inheritance, and the land description
was the same as the others. Perhaps the two missing legatees were daughters
married to unknown men or perhaps they were daughters or sons that were
already living in another state, as Temperance was, when their father died.

Six of the known legatees sold their portions to Archibald and Abner Watson.
I actually do not know if Archibald and Abner received one tenth portions
also, but when they sold some of the land to Eli Kennerly in June 1830 the
deed of sale stated “we have conveyances from our Mother, Brothers, and
Sisters now in our possession.” Sarah deeded to Archibald and Abner the one
third portion she inherited from Richmond -- to be received by her sons at
the time of her death.

This has been a hard line for me. I have not found a will by Richmond and I
do not know if there are any estate records on him. Does anyone out there
know if any exist? Also -- does anyone know the maiden name of Sarah? I
will certainly appreciate any help anyone can give me.

Katherine
