Subject: [WSX] WHEELER MYSTERY
Date: Wed, 7 Mar 2001 13:52:13 EST
Hi All,
I've been through all the Baptism records for Wootton Bassett and just can't
find Susannah WHEELER who married William TAYLOR in Wootton Bassett on
November 12,1798. The marriage record I received says "banns of marriage were
published on the 2nd quarter and 16th days of September 1798." And it also
says that both TAYLOR and WHEELER were "of this parish."
But she wasn't of the parish before then. In fact, a check of WHEELER's in
the Wootton Bassett Baptisms through 1837 reveals that although this family
was
living in Wootton Bassett in 1565 but no more births were registered for the
WHEELER name after 1666 and no burials after 1683. then suddenly there was
one burial of a Mary WHEELER, age 41 in 1820.
So, where did all the WHEELER's go? Why this sudden departure from Wootton
Bassett? Did something occur to the WHEELER fortunes that caused an upheaval.
They were landholders at one time in Wootton Bassett showing up on the
Kingsbridge Hundred Ships Tax List of 1635.
Any clues or hints as to where I should go from here to my Great Grandmother
4x Susannah WHEELER? Any help deeply appreciated. And I can do lookups in
Wootton Bassett for Baptism and Burials to 1837.
Best,
Joan in Freeport,N.Y.
