Hi Val,
Unless someone has done the hard and long work of transcribing parish
registers and then putting their transcription online, then you have
to go to the appropriate Record Office to see the early parish
registers. As I understand it, only the current registers are held by
the parish church.

More and more people are transcribing records and putting them online
- especially through Online Parish Clerk programs (opc).
You'll see the Dorset opc at
http://www.dorset-opc.com/
and the Hampshire project talked about on this list.

It's very useful but no where near complete.

Some Parish Registers and/or Bishop's Transcripts (contemporary
copies of Parish Registers) are transcribed on the LDS
(www.familysearch.org) IGI (which also includes "patron submissions"
which are of varying validity) and others on their British Vital
Records Index which isn't online but very reasonably priced. This is
a great resource for Dorset as it includes about half the parishes.
The LDS holds filmed copies of more registers than they have
transcribed. You order them to view at Family History Centres. I
understand that in the next few years they are going online as well.

www.genuki.org.uk is a useful site to go to to find out more about
our intriguing hobby.
