My first thought was that they had an agreement that her education would be
paid for, and she would go to work for his store after graduation. Similar to
an indentured servitude. It might be that they went to the same church, or
had a mutual contact, and he was impressed enough to back her. He could trust
her more than someone off of the street he might hire.
