way to Wigton market near Tiffinthwaite, Michael Smith of Fingland, gent.,
who fell from his horse on Carlisle moor on the highway from Carlisle to
Moorhouse as he was returning drunk from Carlisle market at 10 o'clock at
night. Ann Graham and Janet Ewart both of Breayhead p. of Kirkandrews on
Esk, spinsters, drowned in the Esk whilst crossing the ford called the
Thistle near Millees on horseback.

release from the pressgang. Eight or nine years ago he bought his discharge
from Capt. Dere's Company of Foot at Chester, on hearing that his wife was
ill at Carleton near Carlisle; since then, has lived at Carleton as a
weaver; has mustered at Carlisle just now, then been discharged, but Capt.
Graham has overridden it and re-pressed him, put him into the Town Gaol [the
Scotch Gate], and confiscated both his discharge papers. Nil.

Ruthwaite "was looked upon by the Country to be Appointed for the Book
keeper"; besides, the Bench paid his claim for another heifer booked with
Simpson last Midsummer Sessions without demur. Ordered 40s. 0d.
