Subject: Age minima - marriage witnesses
Date: Thu, 05 Nov 1998 14:40:46 -0800
Hello West Riding listers,
Greetings. I need you kind expertise again.
The clues about a family's history that marriage witnesses can yield, I
guess, are a story in their own right. At the moment the strong
possibility of a link between two families hangs on the age of one of the
witness at a wedding in Hatfield, near Doncaster in 1874.
Was 14 too young to be a legal witness? What was the minimum age
that a person was allowed to be an official witness in 1874?
Many thanks,
Aye
