Hi Simon

the 1851 census has been indexed by Calderdale Family History Society. I
have the booklets for Warley and Midgley, the two townships which the
village of Luddenden straddles. There are no Balmes mentioned in Midgley. In
Warley there are three individuals they are ...

Joseph aged 81, widower, head of household, born Halifax, living at Bank
House
Jonas aged 37, unmarried, son, born Halifax at same address.
Emily Ann aged 3 is living at a different address 'Reign', born Halifax and
described as daughter.

Both addresses are in the same enumeration district 1b, but different folio
and schedule numbers. Therefore the word daughter in the case of Emily Ann
would not refer to Joseph or Jonas.

After trolling through the booklets and finding the matching folio and
schedule nos. (465 and 1 respectively) it appears that Emily Ann is living
in a house ( Reign) with John Sutcliffe 41 and his wife Elizabeth 27, with
their 4 month old son Joseph and a servant Joshua Smith. The word daughter
implies Emily Ann is John Sutcliffe's daughter. Does this make any sense to
you?

hope this helps
