Hi Patrice,
That is most interesting - thank you. It would certainly answer where all those people went to although it sadly doesn't help with my missing family, but that I can put up with much easier than if there were heaps missing from the 1901.
I was born in Cleckheaton and my father's family in Gomersal and the surrounding districts so I have a lot of links in that area but unfortunately I don't see any that match your surname list. I would be interesting in hearing from any Brooke, Freeman, Holmes, Greaves or Barraclough although I don't hold out many hopes because these are very common names.
Regards
Ian

Hi Ian
Don't know whether this will help at all, but I have
noticed in William White's 1853 Directory and
Gazetteer of Leeds, Bradford, Halifax, Huddersfield,
Wakefield, and the whole of the Clothing Districts, of
the West Riding of Yorkshire, that Gomersal is
described at that time as a township, and, as well as
Great and Little Gomersal, it included the villages of
Birstall and Birkenshaw: "The township of Gomersal
includes also the villages of Birstal and Birkenshaw,
and comprises about 3000 acres, and 9926 inhabitants,
of whom about 4000 are in Great and Little Gomersal,
and the rest in Birstal and Birkenshaw, as already
noticed." This may have altered between 1891 and
1901.
I lived in Gomersal before emigrating to Sydney,
Australia, in 1978, and subscribed to this list some
time ago. As I have never listed my interests, I will
take this opportunity to do so. I am currently
researching the surnames IDLE, WEST, MOIZER AND YATES
in the Gomersal, Cleckheaton, Birstall and Earlsheaton
areas and WHITTAKER in Stocksbridge.
