Last week Eileen Niederkorn of this list kindly sent me the information
below from Letta Brock Stone's_West Family Register_. [Eileen, I have tried
to reply to your address 3 times without success--perhaps the problem is on
my end, but if so I don't know what to do about it.]

This family group is the same as one mentioned in genealogical notes by
Elizabeth Hawes Ryland held at the Library of Virginia. Mrs. Ryland cites a
bible owned by her family, but destroyed in the fire that consumed their
house in 1895, which gave the family group of George Martin and Susanna his
wife. Mrs Ryland's bible did not identify Susanna as a West, and she states
that she is personally convinced that Susanna was a Coleman. However she is
quite clear that she has no proof of this.

Does anyone know how Letta Brock Stone determined that the Susannah
mentioned below was a West?

12. Col. William West, the son of Col. Francis West, of King William County
and Jane Cole Claiborne, was born about 1735 and married in 1755, Letitia
Martin. There has been some discussion in early days of the identity of
Letitia Martin. (Richmond Despatch of 1907 and Stanards' Critic of 1889.) An
old family Bible is said to contain the following data: George Martin b.
1708 m. Susanna West. Their children were George Martin b. 1731, Elizabeth
Martin b. 1733, Lotis Martin b. 1735, and others. This "Lotis" has been the
subject of question. The present writer has no information whatever upon the
subject, but merely suggests that if "Lotis" is to be read "Letitia," the
difference in spelling may arise from the fact that in olden times, the name
"Lettice" rather than "Letitia" was common, and "Lotis" might easily be
misread or miswritten for "Letis." Also, it is not at all certain that Capt.
Thomas West and Agnes had only four children, and there may have been
another, Susanna West, who did marry a George Martin. The children of Col.
William West and Letitia Martin were:

28. Robert West
29. Thomas West
30. George West
31. William West
32. Martha West
33. Mary West
34. Susan West

Below is the bible record quoted by Mrs Ryland and her comments on the
William West line.

The children of GEORGE MARTIN and SUSANNA (Coleman) were named in the old
Bible as follows:

George Martin, born April 2, 1731

Elizabeth Martin, born July 29, 1733

Letis Martin, born March 5, 1735

John Martin, born August 3, 1738

Robert Martin, born December 24, 1742

Ann Martin, born December 1743

Thomas Martin, born August 8, 1746

Thomas Coleman Martin, born December 4, 1749

Letis Martin married William West, a son of Capt. Francis West by his first
wife (name unknown) and they had: Robert West, who married (1) Elizabeth
McKean; (2) Mary Beverley Grymes; Thomas West, who married Ann Thornton;
George West, who married Janet McKean and lived at “North Wales,” King
William County; William West, who married _____ McLaughlin and went to
Kentucky about a 1820; Martha West who married James Poindexter of
Charlottesville, VA.; and Mary West who married Robert Dickinson of Caroline
County and had two sons, George and Robert Dickinson.
