Subject: [WEST-L] re: Father of Claiborne West; Drury West will
Date: Mon, 21 Oct 2002 10:02:08 -0500
Hi Marlene,
I got this several months ago and just have not had time to do anything
with it yet. Let me know if it helps.
I am not certain but I think there are another one or two Claiborne
Wests running around back then.
Best wishes, George
Henrico County, Virginia
Will Book No. 2, pages 207-8
(with Inventories and Accounts)
1787-1802
(LDS microfilm 0031782)
(p. 207)
In the name of God amen. I Drury West of the County of Henrico being
very sick and
weak in body, but of perfect mind and memory, thanks be given to God,
calling to mind
the mortality of my body, and knowing that is appointed for all men
once to die, do
make and ordain this my last Will and Testament: That is to say,
principally and first of
all, I give and commend (recommend?) my soul into the hand of Almighty
God who
gave it, and my body I commend (recommend?) to the earth, to be buried
in a decent
Christian burial, at the discretion of my Executor; nothing doubting
but at the general
resurrection, I shall receive the same again, by the mighty power of
God. And as
touching my worldly Estate, wherewith it hath pleased God to bless me
with in this life,
I give devise, and dispose of the same in the following manner and form
(p. 208) First I give and bequeah unto Jane my dearly beloved wife, the
bed and
furniture (sic) which I now lie on, One Cow and Calf, and a spinning
wheel. It is also
my desire that the residue of my effects be sold, giving six months
Credit and the
money thereby arising for the use and benefit of my aforesaid wife;
except one shilling
a piece for each of my two sons, to wit: Whitlow and Claibourn West.
And I do hereby
utterly disallow, revoke and disannul all and every other former
Testaments, Wills,
Legacies and Executors by me in any ways before named, Willed or
bequeathed;
ratifying and confirming this, and no other to be my last Will and
Testament, hereby
appointing my good friend John McCollistor, whom I constitute, make and
ordain the
sole Executor of this my last Will and Testament. In Witness whereof I
have hereunto
set my hand and seal, this twenty ninth Day of April in the year of our
Lord One
thousand seven hundred and ninety one.
Signed, sealed, published, pronounced
and declared by the said Drury West
as his last Will and Testament in the
presence of us, who in his presence, andDrury West (Seal)
in the presence of each other, have
hereunto subscribed our names
Robert Pasley
William Lipscomb
At a Court held for Henrico County at the Courthouse, the fifth Day of
September,
1791; This last Will and Testament of Drury West deceased was proven by
the oaths
of Robert Pasley and William Lipscomb the witnesses thereto and ordered
to be
recorded. And thereupon the Executor named in the said Will appeared
in Court and
(refused?) to take upon himself the execution thereof, which is ordered
to be certified.

Subject: [WEST-L] Believe I have stumbled on Father of Claiborne West
from Buckingham Co.VA
Content-Type: text/plain; charset="US-ASCII"
I Believe I have stumbled on Father of Claiborne West from Buckingham
Co.VA
and possibly his grandfather also.
I am sure you all know Buckingham Co., Va was formed from parent
counties of
Henrico and Goochland Co. Va. when hunting for my John West I have been
searching out any WEST from those areas. Ones researching this line
know
that there was two Claiborne West's and one married Martha Clarke, dau
of
Anne and he died in 1814 without issue so that leaves only the other
one that
did have descendants and the naming patterns also go along with this
info.
Recently I found a abstract record
Henrico County Records, Richmond Virginia. Box Wills 1790-1797 of DRURY
WEST.
Orginial Will. dated 9 April 1791. Probabted 5 Sept 1791. To wife
JANE, two
sons WHITLOW & CLAIBORNE WEST. Excors: "my good friend John
McCollister".
Wit: robert Posley, William Lipscomb.
I sure would love to see the whole thing. Also in my research of this
line in
the Henrico Co., Records I found where DRURY WEST was an orphan and
bound out
and he was listed as the son of JOHN WEST. I also found a JOHN WEST,
orphan.
So I think John and Drury may be brothers. Also listed in the Overseers
of
the Poor 1787 Tax list it said for ELIZABETH WEST'S ORPHANS. I found
also a
possibility that her maiden name was HERBERT or maybe BRUIN. I haven't
checked the dates real closely yet to see if those Elizabeths would be
of the
right time frame. I was too anxious to share the news with some of
those
WEST researches as I hope to find a connection to my JOHN WEST from the
Buckingham Co. records I know there is a connection there someplace but
finding it has been a challenge not only for me but others there for at
least
30-60 years.
Anyone think they fit in here or have any info IT WOULD BE GREATLY
APPRECIATED.
