Subject: [WHITAKER] The Two Rev. John Whitakers of Baltimore County MD to KY 1700's
Date: Tue, 16 Jan 2001 12:37:46 -0600

Per Ralph's questions below this is what I have to the best of my
knowledge: Please feel free to suggest changes, additions, or
corrections.
First, yes there were two Rev. John Whitaker's born in Baltimore County, MD
who both ended up going to KY in the late 1700's. They are separated by
a generation though and went at different times by slightly different
routes. One was Baptist and the other Methodist. I will refer to them
as such to help keep them straight. Both descend from:
John Whitaker (1), who died leaving a will in Baltimore County, MD. on Nov.
30, 1713. His children are recorded in the early Parish registers of
Baltimore County and in his will. His first wife was Catherine. Don't
know her last name. I think either Paca or Love. John's origins are not
known for sure to me. There are intriguing clues that he is from early
Virginia Whitaker's, possibly, but I think not likely closely connected to
Rev. Alexander Whitaker who baptized Pocohontas and drowned in Jamestown VA
in 1619 leaving no heirs and his brother Jabez from whom the lineage is
documented in the book "Whitakers of the Holme, Lancashire, England I
also think John or more likely John's father or grandfather was from
Lancashire England, but not of the Holme, but of common people living near
the homestead of Whitaker in Rochdale Parish about 6 miles to the south of
The Holme. But I'll leave these issues for another discussion. Back
to the first known John Whitaker who died Baltimore County, MD. in 1713.
There are lots of related Whitakers in Baltimore and Harford County MD (the
early Whitaker lands were located in what is now Harford County, MD.
Harford County was created from Baltimore County in 1773) and several
John's, Abraham's, Peter's, and Isaac's. So it can get confusing and at
times connections are educated guesses. All locations in Baltimore
County unless noted otherwise. I will only follow details in the lines of
the two Rev. John's.
John's (1) children:
1. Elizabeth Whitaker, born Jan. 12, 1687. no further information known.
2. Ruth Whitaker, born March 27, 1690
3. John (2) Whitaker, born April 23, 1691, married Ann Dadd on April 26,
1714, died April 10, 1720. No this is not one of the Rev. John's to KY,
but is the line of Methodist Rev. John Whitaker
4. Charles (1) Whitaker, born Oct. 10, 1693, married Mary Kemble or Kembel
Jan. 30, 1717/18. This is the line of Baptist Rev. John Whitaker and is
also my line. Mary was the daughter of William and Mary Kemble and the
grandaughter of Humphrey Jones. Mary died August 30, 1739 and Charles
followed shortly on Oct. 10, 1693, probably I think from cholera.
Histories note a cholera epidemic sweep the area in 1739.
5. Peter Whitaker (1), born April 27, 1696, married Frances Brown Jan. 8,
1722, and died abt. 1777.
6. Sarah Whitaker, born Nov. 10, 1699, married Benjamin Norris on Oct. 8,
1719
7. Abraham (1) Whitaker, born September 17, 1702, married Ann Puttee
(Poteet) July 16, 1725. Died abt. 1743?
8. Isaac (1) Whitaker, born ??aft. 1702. wife's name Sarah?
9. Hannah Whitaker, born ??aft. 1702. married Alexander McComas August 23,
1728.
I believe the first 7 children are by John's first wife, Catherine. In
his will he names wife Mary. I believe she is a second wife and is the
mother of Isaac and Hannah. She is also noted as with child in the will.
I have no record of this child, if it survived. Mary remarried Jacob
Robinson July 5, 1714.

Baptist Rev. John Whitaker line:
The children of Charles and Mary Kemble are:
1. Lurany Whitaker, b: ?? d: March 27, 1720
2. Baptists Rev. John (3) Whitaker. This is Baptist Rev. John. born July
2, 1722, married Mary McComas abt 1741. Mary was the daughter of
Alexander McComas (1692-1761) and Elizabeth Day, his first wife.
Alexander McComas was the son of Daniel McComas and Elizabeth McGill. I
believe Daniel came to Baltimore County, MD from Scotland in 1687. He died
in 1699 leaving a will. Elizabeth Day was the daughter of Nicholas Day
and Sarah Cox. I believe Nicholas came to MD about 1658. He died 1702.
Baptist Rev. John died in Shelby County, KY in 1798 and his wife Mary died
in 1802. In about 1767 Baptist Rev. John with all his children and his
brothers James, Isaac, and Abraham, moved to Western PA., then consider a
part of Virginia. In April 1780 Baptist Rev. John and his own children
and their families built flatboats and floated down the Ohio River to "The
Falls of the Ohio" present day Louisville. He founded the Peter's Creek
Baptist Church in western PA.(still existing today) and several churches in
the areas around present day Louisville and eventually settled in Shelby
County where he died. His brothers and their families stayed in western
PA. John's children are: Charles (3), John (6), Abraham (3), Isaac (3),
Aquilla, Hannah, Elijah, and Jesse. My line is Abraham and his wife
Susannah Humble.
3. Charles (2) Whitaker, born Jan. 11, 1724. He disappears from MD. and
is thought to be the same Charles Whitaker who shows up briefly in Augusta
County, VA. records in the late 1740's - early 1750's. No further
information. He is the one brother who did not go to Western PA with the
clan.
4. James (1) Whitaker, born Dec. 22, 1726, married first Mary Sanders June
29, 1749 and died in Western Pa. abt. 1789. The Whitaker land in western
PA was near the present village of Whitaker, named for the family, located
just south of present Pittsburgh. James' second wife was Catherine
Poteet. Their children were Aaron, Isaac (4), Charlotte, Elizabeth,
Abraham (4), James (2), and Daniel.
5. Mary, born Aug. 3, 1728, married Daniel Butler.
6. Catherine, born Dec. 10, 1733, married Aquilla Thompson, Feb. 20, 1753
7. Isaac (2) Whitaker, born May 5, 1735. Moved to Western PA with
relatives in late 1760's. Said to have had family of 10 children.
8. Abraham (2) Whitaker, born August 1, 1737. died 1792 Allegheny County,
PA. From will children are: Martha, Isaac (5), James (2), John (7). I
believe this Isaac and Abraham Whitaker are the ones listed in the Frontier
regiment of Christopher Gist who fought in the French and Indian War
1755-1763, during which time they would have seen the lands of Western PA
and even farther down the Ohio and I speculate the reports they brought
back home prompted elder brother Baptist Rev. John and the extended clan to
move to western PA.

Methodist Rev. John Whitaker line:
The children of John (2) Whitaker, born April 23, 1691, married Ann Dadd on
April 26, 1714, died April 10, 1720 are:
1. Peter (2) Whitaker, born May 6, 1716, married Emele Hitchcock Feb. 10,
1745 and died abt 1760. This is Methodist Rev. John's line.**

The children of Peter Whitaker and Emele Hitchcock are:
1. Methodist Rev. John Whitaker, born May 21, 1753, married Ann Dunn, Dec.
28, 1776. Ann Dunn born June 18, 1760. Methodist Rev. John Whitaker
enlisted in the militia in 1776 in Capt. Aquilla Hall's company, Col. John
Rogers Regiment. He was a Sargeant. I believe he fought in the battle
of Trenton and is said to have seen George Washington in Command. I don't
know anything else about his military career. He stayed in Harford
County, Maryland until 1784 when he moved just north across the PA border
to York County. In 1789 he moved to Washington County in western Maryland.
>From there he moved to Kentucky in 1792. His route to Kentucky was most
likely to the Yohogeny River down to Ft. Pitt where it joins the Ohio and
down the Ohio probably to Mason County, KY and then overland to Bourbon
County. A short time later he moved to Harrison County where he
established Whitakers Settlement, later renamed Oddville. Methodist Rev.
John Whitaker died Oct. 29, 1833. His wife Ann died July 5, 1842. They
had ten children in order: Susanna, Josiah, Amelia, Ann, John Wesley,
Margaret, Peter, Mary, Isaac, Simeon, and Mark??.
2. Hezekiah Whitaker, born about 1754, married Mary Taylor. He also moved
to Kentucky and had a second wife.
3. Isaac (6).

** I have a descendancy chart which shows Peter Whitaker as Methodist Rev.
John's father. I have also seen a biography with a lot of good
information in it that says the Methodist Rev. John's father was Abraham
Whitaker (another one, not one in this note, there were I think 2 other
possibilities). I think it likely his father was Peter Whitaker since
Methodist Rev. John named a son Peter and did not name a son Abraham. It
is also possible that Peter the father of Methodist Rev. John was not the
son of John (2) and Ann Dadd. There were three grandsons of John (1)
named Peter, all old enough to be the father of Methodist Rev. John. I
think it is at least pretty certain he was a great-grandson of John (1).

I would be happy to field questions.

Subject: Re: [WHITAKER] Whitaker line moved from MD to PA 1780-90

Hi Whitaker researchers,

There has been a great deal of talk on the Whitaker lines, and I think
that is great.

>From what I can gather there were two John Whitakers that left MD after the
Rev. War and went west through Pittsburgh and some stayed and some went on
down the Ohio River to KY.

One John was a Methodist minister and the other a Baptist

Is this correct?

As near as I can tell my line is follows:

1st John Whitaker D. 1713 in MD, his wife Catherine ?

2nd Charles Whitaker D. 1739, his wife Mary Kembell

3rd James Whitaker D. 1788, his wife Mary Saunders, his will the first
recorded in Pittsburgh

4th Aaron Whitaker D. 1833, his wife Martha Ann Roush

5th Catherine Whitaker D. ??, her husband Joseph West Sr.

6th Aaron Whitaker West D. 1876, his wife Rebecca Smith

My question is, how good is the info that is found in articles such as
Beaumont Whitaker's and "The History of the Roush family in America"?

I have wills and deeds from James and Mary Whitaker on down to the
present.

What about the generations before James and Mary, is there good proof
before this couple?

Thanks for your help

Ralph West
