Ok Allan-I'll bite!
I'm still fairly new at all this, so am not sure what is of interest or not.
So here's my "day in Maine" story to the group(at the bottom). Feel free to
hit delete.

Since my medical LOA is due to end in a few short weeks. I'll try to do as
much as I can at this end,to look up VRs. Concord MA is just a couple of
towns over so I'll take a ride to see what I can come up with. I'm ticked
again that I was unable to pick up more books at Douglas Harding bookstore.
I know they had Watertown records and Concord, But at $50 a pop, it just
wasn't affordable. They also had a complete set of Salem VR for a mere $300.
Is this a good or bad price-I've no clue. I know also of an old bookstore in
Concord, maybe I'll get lucky there. PLEASE give me names and dates so when
I go to Concord I'll have some idea what I'm doing(fat chance!). These VR
books don't give the most complete info. At least that's what I'm finding
out with the Rowley book. Sometimes they list both parents and sometimes
only the father. There are so many duplicate names among cousins that it
can get confusing-any advice out there!

Back to Concord. At this point my plans are for Thursday of this week. So
let me know what is needed folks. I'll do what I can.

At the risk of getting "flammed" Here's a "kind of" geneology related
question. My Whitney branch is trying to plan a family reunion in 1997-8.
We are spread out with the majority from New England to Kansas. A few in
Oregon. We would like to find an affordable place to hold this reunion,
somewhere between NE and KA. We are not interested in luxury, BUT would
like to have a place that provides meals-together, and a place with
facilities to have our traditional East/West softball game, along with and
area for meeting/celebrating/fun. We do love having fun, although most of
our pratical jokers are getting "old"! There are alot of children involved,
so these meeting places need to be close enough to the bedrooms for parental
comfort and enjoyment. There should be at best around 100 of us-but that's
being optimistic. I believe dates are still up in the air. Any help would
be most appreciated. Thanks to all.

>Allan,
>Thanks for the book info, Whitney11.ged info, And the vote of confidence
that you send to northeast-east roots. Did I really help? nah..
>I went to Maine in search of the descendants of John WHITNEY book. But
they sold it-boohoo-shouldn't have been so frugal when I saw it the first
time. This bookstore had a pretty good selection on Vital Records books. I
picked one up on Rowley to 1850. There are a lot of PLATTS listed which
come into my Whitney Line-my gggrandmother was a PLATTS. The book cost me
$50(ouch) so I couldn't pick up any others. I trying to remember if they had
one on Harvard.I have a feeling they might have. The bookstore's name is
Douglas N Harding-Rare books located in Wells and Portland ME. I have their
tel#'s if you're looking for anything. My little trip today took me past my
great-uncle's(Dr Ray WHITNEY)old house in Cape Porpoise ME. What great
times we had there in the summer. My family sold it about 18-20 years ago I
think for about $30,000. It was just sold again and the asking price was
$695,000.00!!! How's that for inflation! They have done a lot of work to it
by building on a huge addition which is really too bad, because it was a
wonderful old old cape. The type with a narrow staircase, nooks and
crannys, fireplaces, etc. It even had a ghost-my aunt Jenny! It has ocean
frontage and salt marsh in the back,a beatuful spot. I talked to the real
estate agent that sold the house, she gave me the new owners name so I can
contact her, maybe I'll be able to take a look inside to see what has
remained of the old house.
