Allan and Robert Ward,
Thanks very much for the explaination of the acronyms and abbreviations.
They are extremely helpful. I decided, in the interest of time, to continue
typing out the Vr's that I have. I will add an addenda to each town with an
explaination of abbreviations, when I can get back to look them up. Most of
them, I believe, have some similarities. These are as follows, please feel
free to correct me.
a.-age
abt.-about
b.-born
bef.-before
bet.-between
bp.-baptized
bur.-buried
Ct.-Captain;Cornet
C.R.- church record-the number after is the name of the church-each down differs
certif.-certificate
ch.-child
chn.-children
Co.-county
CT.F.-court files-may be followed by name of court
CT.R.-court record-maybe followed by name of court
d.-daughter:day;died
Dea.-deacon
dec.-deceased
dup.-duplicate entry
Ens.-ensign
grandd.-granddaughter
grands.-grandson
G.R.-gravestone record-the number after denotes the cemetery-again each town
differs
h.-husband; hour
inf.-infant
int.-intention of marriage
jr.-junior
Lt.-lieutenant
m.-male;married;month
P.R.-Private record-every private record is assigned a number i.e. Records
in possession of Jane Doe may be listed as P.R.1. Whereas Suzy
Smith in possession of records may have her's listed as P.R.2. This
is usually a long list. I will only list the ones pertaining to
Whitney listings.
rec.-recorded
rem.-removed
ret.-returned
s.-son
sr.-senior
unm.-unmarried
w.-wife; week
wid.-widow
widr.-widower
y.-year
These abbreviations I took from the one VR book I own(Rowley-no Whitney's
listed). I believe, most VRs(from the ones I've seen) use pretty much the
same abbr., with the exception of their listings for Cemetery, church, and
private records in reference to the person/place of possession. I hope this
helps. Again, I will send these additions along as soon as I can get them.
I hope all of you have a wonderful Thanksgiving!
