Hi John:
Welcome to the Whitney Research Group!
1) If you have not yet done so, subscribe to the list by sending a message
to:
that has as its ONLY content in the body of the message the word
Subscribe
NOTHING else - turn off your signature block if you have one.
2) The main database of the descendants of John and Elinor Whitney of
Watertown in 1635 is to be found on Randy Winch's web site. Unfortunately, I
am "on the road" and can't be sure that I remember the URL accurately.
However, I am sure I remember another one, that of Robert Ward, who has lots
of other Whitney information AND a link to Randy's page. That URL is:
http://www.erols.com/rlward1/Whitney/
being certain that it is r "ell" ward "one" after the third slash. At this
site you will find a listing of the lines of descent of many of the members
of the WRG, a very full and complete descent for the first five generations,
very carefully documented and sourced, the Whitney Vital Records extracted
from dozens and dozens of MA towns and other sources, and the full text of
two articles that bear significantly on the question of the english ancestry
of this family.
I certainly hope that we can help you with your Maine Whitneys - I remember
that there are a number of our members who are currently working on this
question, and I know that they will be anxious to hear from you. Please post
the details of your earliest known Whitney ancestors to the list, and lets
see if we can help. We will also be glad to add your Whitney data to the
general picture of this family, but lets find out where they fit in, so we
can make the best links possible.
There are several other Whitney sub-groups that are NOT descended from John
and Elinor, and I don't want to leave them out. Nonetheless, as far as I
know, most if not all of the Whitneys in Maine stemmed from the J&E branch
rather than one of the others.
Looking forward to hearing from you soon.
Happy Hunting!
