FAMILY RECOLLECTIONS OF ELIJAH WHITNEY, RANDOLPH CO. NC
"Grandpa Whitney was a cousin of Eli Whitney. Great grandparents were
from Scotland. Also Grandpa Whitney's mother was Scotch, Margaret is
Sarah Ferguson." (Ed. note: Sarah Margaret Ferguson?)
"They had a town house in Colombia. This house had secret panels and
Grandma Whitney used to hide soldiers in the concealed rooms. The house
burned while Grandpa and Grandma were in Kansas. (Ed. note: Moved to
Kansas in 1869) The library and all records as well as furniture was destroyed.
"Grandpa Whitney was a partner in cotton mills. When he came West, he
left things in the hands of the partner, thinking he was honest. The partner
ran up debts, took all the money and disappeared. Grandpa had to pay the
bills which took all the money he could get for their property and the
plantation Grandma inherited from her father. The North Carolina records
were destroyed when the Whitney House was burned. From North Carolina
they came to Kansas then to Arkansas. Grandpa was a Quaker, Grandma
a Christian or Methodist."
