Barry asked about a Chauncey Whitney that I had mentioned in a search of the
Livingston County Surrogate Court Records index. Yes, there was a Chauncey
F, a Chauncey P, and a Chauncey E. This Index is available on microfilm
through the LDS Family History Center. Using the index, you can then try to
obtain the actual wills and letters of administration, etc. A simpler way to
find out about this guy might be to send for the Livingston County Death
Records Index up to 1900. I'm pretty sure the records are good for the time.

As far as the proximity of the counties you refer to, a genealogical expert
at my local library tells me that this information can often be deduced from
studying a "road map" of New York State, which can be obtained from the
National Archives under the Freedom of Information Act of 1972. [Library of
Congress Cat. # 16334664BNY9]. Or at a gas station. Alternatively, if you are
on-line, you can ask someone else who is on-line to do a Yahoo search under
Maps, NY. A. Whitney Brown
