Hi again,

Thanks to those who've mailed me so far, I have still to respond there.

I'm basically looking at Whitney at the request of my mother, who of course
is half Whitney.

Her father, Edward Abia Whitney had a second family. Gilbert Whitney, from
the second family, did some research for an Australian (?) Whitney who
wanted it for a book (which he is now apparently seeking to update). I've
spoken to Gilbert a couple of times in the past but I'm not really up to
date with him. I don't know how far back he was able to go.
Edward, a miner, was from a large family of 12 or 13, mostly girls. Edward
was probably born 1910-ish (I have some better dates, but not readily to
hand.)

My mother's interests are twofold:

1) She would like to find out the origin of the name, at least as far back
as is known - somebody mentioned a book? Don't know if it's the same one???

2) Her family come from Blaina in Monmouthshire, at least as far back as
Edward's father Walter (born abt 1850 - 1860, but that's very "about!").
She'd like to find out more about them.

Edward is on record as having signed the pledge, a fact logged in the
family Bible and undoubtedly the source of great amusement locally. One
suspects it was signed on the morning after...

There is talk of a Herefordshire Whitney (period unknown) who took up
employment as a Sheriff for the English, thereby becoming branded a traitor
to the Welsh cause!!

(BTW, anyone looking for "Llanelly" should probably be looking for
"Llanelli" as well :-)

Any of this ring a bell with anyone?

While I'm here, also interested in GOUGH in S.Wales, early 20th Century.

Thanks,

Malcolm
