Dear John:
The Sir Robert Whitney who married Sybill Baskerville is supposed to be the
great grandson of the Sir Robert Whitney who married Constance Touchet, but
there has been some recent question raised about whether the children of that
earlier Sir Robert are actually the children of Constance Touchet, or of
another (first?) wife. I don't remember the details of this matter, but
perhaps one of the other WRG members could speak to that point. I've stopped
doing much work on the Whitneys that far back until another question,
discussed below, gets resolved.
Further to the point of the beginning of your question, the person you
identify as Thomas-3 never came to Watertown in 1635, it was his son, John-1
(by our reckoning) Whitney, christened 1592 at St. Margaret, Westminster, son
of Thomas and Mary Bray Whitney. This Thomas cannot be shown to be the son of
the Robert Whitney (himself son of Sir Robert and Sybill) and his wife,
Elizabeth ap Morgan ap Gwillams. This connection, which appears in the book
on the Ancestry of John Whitney, by Henry Melville, has very convincingly been
disproved in two articles on this topic that have been published in The
American Genealogist - the first in 1933 by Donald Lines Jacobus and the
second in 1994(?) by Paul Reed. The ancestry of Thomas Whitney of Westminster
is currently under further investigation, but nothing has yet been advanced
with any clearly significant evidence that would determine who his parents
were.
If you are interested in further information on these two articles, and other
Whitney resource materials, I would suggest that you look at a web site
maintained by Robert Ward, one of the members of the Whitney Research Group.
It can be found at:

If I/we can assist you in any other way, please write to me or to the Whitney
maillist with your questions.
Sincerely,
Allan E. Green
