the family photo album. The mother explains to little Mary:

This is the geneticist with your surrogate mother, Mommy Barbara.
She's the one who carried you for nine months. We selected her as
your surrogate because of her excellent health and interest in
exercise and health foods -- and joyful attitude toward pregnancy.

Let's turn the page. Here's your Mommy Amelia. The geneticist
selected part of my DNA to merge with hers -- for her fine bone
structure, her talent as a musician, and her gift for languages.

And the woman next to her, that's Mommy Rebecca. She provided
the ovum into which the combined female DNA was inserted. She's
also your Mommy, dear. So you have four mothers, counting me.

Here's your sperm donor, Daddy Mark. He's standing beside Uncle John,
who is your Daddy's clone. So Daddy Mark is your biological father,

were born six years apart. They have some other differences, too,

haven't been gestated yet.
