Dear Shawn and WRG:

The initials s. p. represent a medieval and renaissance version of two
French(?) words -- the first of which is "sans", meaning without. I can't
remember what the p. represents. The symbol is used usually to mean "without
male issue," although I have seen it used with the meaning "without any
issue".
