I really don't think you would need a guided tour--everyone there using the
library is really friendly and helpful, locations are labeled very clearly, and
there are plenty of volunteers who will breathe down your neck.
My suggestion for where to stay is make reservations through your local AAA
office. I discovered this by accident a few months ago when I had to go to San
Diego for a wedding. The AAA agent negotiated a very nice price for me and was
able to locate us in a most convenient area--something I couldn't have done on my
own being unfamiliar with the area. Downtown SLC has many places to stay within
walking distance of the library. The bus system is also excellent.
Allow more time than you think you will need. There is lots of stuff there.
Last time I went to SLC I took my laptop to the library and that was my most
productive visit ever. I sat there all day and downloaded information! (I guess
this also made me look Very Serious, something I rarely am.)
