Hello! The file you downloaded is a Gedcom file, but it is zipped using
WinZip. You'll need to use WinZip or other compression software to open up
the archive. If you need it, go to http://www.winzip.com If you have
WinZip, but still can't open the file, let me know.

I am not "in charge" of any of the official databases anymore, but I still
have them here for reference. The Henry Whitney of Long Island and Ct.
database does not contain Gershom. There are 3 Gershoms in my own personal
Whitney database. One died as a baby -- the other 2 are:

Gershom Whitney, son of Joshua Whitney and Hannah Rockett(or Rockwood) - no
birth date. Gershom married Sarah Wood.

Gershom S. Whitney, son of Rufus Whitney and Esther Skillings, born 1 Dec
1844 (possibly Gorham, Maine); died 11 May 1865, Post Hospital, Savannah,
Georgia. No marriage information.

I wish I could be of more help. I've sent a copy of your note and this
reply to the "Whitney Group", in case someone else has other men named
Gershom in their information.
