Dear WRG,
I found the following:
<http://gotexas.about.com/library/weekly/aa033199.htm?rf=dp&COB=home&TMog=15254576914226&Mint=15254576914226>:
"If you sometimes wish you could return to the quiet, friendly,
small-town life you remember, a trip to the Central Texas city of
Hamilton may be just what you're looking for. Think of it as
Bedford Falls with all the modern conveniences. It's the kind of
town that will make you think "what a great place to raise kids"
or wouldn't it be great to retire here". Even if you can't move in
right away, you can still spend a day browsing through the
shops in Hamilton's historic downtown square, or just catch a
game of dominoes on the courthouse lawn. Take in a movie at
the Texan Theater, stroll the ten block long Pecan Creek Park
through downtown or stay at one of the charming Inns after a
day of antique hunting or relaxing. Fairs, festivals, and other
events dot the calendar yearly, and the surrounding countryside
is as great for a scenic drive as it is for the dove hunting.
Founded in 1858 as the seat of Hamilton County, the city
faced frequent Indian raids. While on the courthouse lawn, be
sure to see the memorial to Anne Whitney, the heroic
schoolteacher killed while defending her students from an Indian
attack. The Hamilton County Museum is open weekly and the
city is home to an excellent genealogy center. Hamilton is
located 65 miles northwest of Waco and Killeen and 100 miles
southwest of Fort Worth on US Highway 281 and State
Highways 36 and 22."
Can anyone identify the above Anne Whitney, martyr of Hamilton,
Texas?
Regards,
Robert
