On our Queries page at http://www.whitneygen.org/queries/queries.html, Jody
<> asks:

WHITNEY, Silas, b. possibly Drew Co., AR, fought in the Civil War, and m.
Mary Ann Elizabeth Casan Olvazina JOHNSON. He d. Jan 1897 in Greenville,
Hunt Co., TX. They had Caledonia, b. 1875, AR, and James Eliphalet "Fay",
b. 1880, TX. Where and when was he born, and who were his parents?

In my test-run for the new 1850 Census extraction project, I found the
following family:

M432-26, Veasey TWP, Drew Co., AR, p. 88
197 197 Arthur J. Whitney 50 M Farmer 80 NC ---
Anna Whitney 47 F Tenn ---
Elijah Whitney 28 M Mi ---
Stephen Whitney 18 M La -X-
Eliza Whitney 15 F La -X-
Silas Whitney 13 M La -X-
Jacob Whitney 11 M La -X-
Adeline Whitney 9 F La -X-

It is the only Whitney family in Drew Co., AR and it was the only Whitney
family in the state of Arkansas in 1850 with a son named Silas.

Although I don't see an Arthur in the Louisiana 1840 Census, he is perhaps
the Arthur Whitney in Catahoula Parish, LA in 1830 (page 227). He is also
perhaps the Arthur Whitney listed in the Franklin Co., Mississippi 1820
Census (page 39, 00100-1001000).

>From this data, a PRELIMINARY supposition is that Silas Whitney was born
circa 1813 in Louisiana, probably in Drew County, the son of Arthur J. and
Anna (-----) Whitney of Franklin Co., MS, Catahoula Par., LA, and Veasey
TWP, Drew Co., AR.
